3 Healthy Foods to Satisfy Your Cool Weather Cravings

By Michael Cole

The fall and winter are full of fun. Between the changing weather, holiday cheer, and endless activities, it is truly one of the most beloved times of year! Another great part about this time of year is the wonderful foods. When it's cold -- or even cool -- people cook cozy comfort food that hits the belly and keeps you warm. Of course, sometimes the foods at this time of year aren’t quite as healthy as we would like. If you want to get in the spirit of the season, but would also like to stay healthy, check out these warm and healthy foods to satisfy your winter cravings.

Oatmeal

This food is so, so, so good for the body. It is one of the best foods to eat for breakfast, but it has so few calories and so many benefits, you can literally eat it at any time. Oatmeal contains both protein and fiber, which means you may have more energy, but you will also feel full. It also contains healthy nutrients that are thought to lower cholesterol levels in the body. The key to oatmeal is to eat the real kind (no flavors), and watch what you use to sweeten it. With a little sugar or cinnamon, your oatmeal can still be a healthy and warm choice all season long.

Chicken Soup

Your mother was totally right. Chicken soup can keep you warm and it can also keep you healthy. Chicken soup, or more specifically the broth, contains nutrients and vitamins that are super healthy and helps to fight off germs and illness. When you feel a cold coming on, stock up on chicken soup and eat to your heart’s content. Chicken soup also contains protein, is low in calories, and keeps you warm.

Sweet Potato

Nothing says fall like a rich orange sweet potato. These delicious treats are actually really good for your body. They contain a good amount of fiber to help keep digestion and metabolism moving, and they also contain high amounts of Vitamin C. This vitamin is great for boosting the immune system and keeping you healthy. But, that’s not where the powers of a sweet potato end. It also contains Vitamin A, Vitamin B, and many other nutrients that keep you stronger and healthier. Just bake one of these whole in the oven or slice them up and make a side dish, and enjoy a warm treat with multiple healthy benefits.

Eating healthy through the holidays is not impossible. It can be tough, but if you have a plan in mind, it becomes a lot easier. Use these foods as a guide, and keep your body healthy throughout the cooler season.
