Is Your House Messing with Your Hormone Balance?

By Sara Butler

Your environment is a big piece of the picture of your overall health. You spend a lot of time at home and the things you have around you make a big impact – even on your endocrine system. Houses can be healthy or they can be complete biohazards, but how do you know which kind of house you live in? Here are some of the common problems in homes that could be messing with your hormones and how you can fix it.

How Your House Can Impact Your Body

Many people suffer from hormone imbalances of all different kinds simply because of a number of chemicals humans are exposed to through the course of their everyday life. Some of these chemicals you may be aware of, such as those in the food you eat or the make-up you wear. Maybe you’ve made some changes in the things you buy to help combat your exposure to these chemicals, yet you’ve missed some that are right in your very home.

Home cleaning products can be some of the biggest endocrine system disruptors out there. So, it may be time to re-evaluate some of the things you have in your home that could possibly be causing you some big health problems.

Is Going “Green” the Answer?

You may think the best way to combat household chemicals is through buying “green” cleaning supplies, but this can be a bit misleading. These cleaning products are not regulated by any government entity, so the manufacturers are not legally obligated to disclose to you what is in their products. This can make these products even more dangerous than the regular cleaning products available to you!

Do It Yourself

You don’t have to go out and buy fancy eco-friendly cleaning products to try to create a safer home, all you need are things you likely have already! Nature can provide you with all you need to keep your home clean and chemical-free. You can use:

  • Coffee – Coffee actually is for more than just drinking, because it makes a really great deodorizer! If there’s a place in your home that needs a little freshening, just put some coffee grounds (used even!) in a bowl and place it where you need it. You can also use lemons!
  • Salt – Ever wonder how to sanitize your kitchen sponge naturally? Everyone knows that the kitchen sponge is one of the biggest bacteria biohazards in the home, but you can easily clean it with a solution of cold water and a lot of salt. Just soak the sponges for two hours and you will be germ-free!
  • Baking Soda – Baking soda has a lot of uses around the home, including using it to clean your oven or microwave, sprinkle on your carpet as a deodorizer, or use it to remove stains by mixing it with water and leaving it to soak for a bit.

There are truly natural alternatives you can use to clean your whole home that will create a safe environment for you and your family!
