3 Ways to Boost Your Workout Motivation

By Genevieve Cunningham

Working out is tough, and keeping a regular workout routine is even tougher! Life just seems to get in the way sometimes. You might have work, a community or family obligation, a busy home life … or a new Netflix series that is just begging to be binged. Whatever is standing in your way, it generally boils down to one main problem: motivation. It’s hard to find and it’s especially hard to keep. If you’ve lost yours, take a look at these three tips for restarting your motivation and getting back on the workout train.

Get Some New Tunes

Music can make a huge difference in the way your workout goes. If you’ve lost motivation, try changing your soundtrack. Pick some new, motivational, upbeat songs and make a brand new playlist. This can lift your spirits and make your workout feel brand new even if it’s the same old thing. Give this technique a try first because it's easy, inexpensive, and one of the fastest ways to get back in the groove.

Break a Sweat

When I’ve really lost motivation, I go for a hard run. You don’t have to choose this activity specifically, but breaking a good sweat makes you remember why you started the journey in the first place. Do an activity that you enjoy, but that is really difficult. Just do it once … and preferably when you’re slightly in the mood. You may be shocked at how quickly this changes your perspective and gets you back in the mood for exercise. Once you’ve done this, go back to your normal routine the next day and see if your motivation is up and running.

Change Your Inner Talk

The way that we talk to ourselves makes the biggest difference in every aspect of life. If you’re not feeling like working out, just start telling yourself that you do. I feel like working out. I love to workout. I am working toward an awesome fitness goal. Soon, your brain will start to believe yourself, and your body will follow the steps that you tell it to. Don’t ever underestimate the power of positive thinking, as there’s really no better motivator than your own desires.

If you’ve lost the motivation to work out, don’t stress. Just use these tips to get back on track. It’s not the end of the world, and you’ll find your groove again! With a little hard work, some luck, and a push in the right direction, you’ll be back in the gym and one step closer to your ultimate goals.
