Common Signs of Too Much Sugar

By Genevieve Cunningham

So many of us have a love/hate relationship with sugar. We love that sweet taste on our tongues, but we’re not so crazy about the extra weight or other negative side effects that sometimes come with it. While a little bit of sugar is probably not going to do too much damage, too much sugar might really wreak havoc on your body. Take a look at these three signs that might suggest you’re getting a little too much and need to cut back on that sweet tooth.

Acne

Acne can be caused by a great number of factors including hormones, oily skin, environmental factors, and many others. One of those factors also happens to be too much sugar. When we have a high sugar intake, our skin shows it in the way of blemishes. In a recent study done by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, those who significantly lowered their sugar intake also saw a reduction in acne. If your acne suddenly seems out of control, look to your diet first. Eliminating or drastically reducing sugar might be just the trick you need to clear up your skin.

Excessive Fatigue

Sugar is supposed to make us energetic and hyper, right? That's what we were all told when we were young. But maybe not. While it might cause an initial surge of energy, that high point is often followed by a serious crash. If your afternoons are nothing more than you fighting your heavy eyelids, take a look at your lunch. Chances are good it contains too much sugar. Lessening this amount might make your afternoons much more bearable.

Headaches

Excessive sugar intake, especially all in one sitting, can cause headaches and blurred vision. The consumption causes your blood sugar level to rise quickly, which your body is unprepared for. When pushed too high, it causes these unwanted side effects. If your headaches are recurrent, take a look at your diet or snacking habits just before the headache occurs. If sugar is a common denominator, eliminate the powdery goodness to see if it helps with the pain.

Sugar is not necessarily the enemy, but it shouldn’t be your BFF either. Eat in moderation, and pay attention to the signs your body gives you. With some precaution and planning, you may be able to have your cake, eat it too, and even enjoy your health at the same time.
