The 5 Facets of Living a Wellness Lifestyle

By Debra Rodzinak

Patients are more than just a spine, a foot, or a stomach.  They are the totality of their entire body.  Total wellness uses the same approach for anyone who is trying to live a healthier lifestyle.  By ignoring all the different facets that create your overall health, you cannot achieve total wellness.  Your body may currently be physically fit, but if your mind and heart are not equally as well, your body is not really healthy.  According to Chiropractic Today, there are five dimensions that make up your health.

Mind

Whether you believe in a higher power, it's imperative to connect your mind and inner self; whether you believe in a higher power, use meditation or another form of self realization to reach inner peace.  Maintaining inner peace reflects in the decisions we make, reducing stress, and maintaining healthy family and friend relationships.

Neurological

Your nervous system travels your entire body.  It is made up of your brain, spinal column, and nerves.  When your spine is out of alignment, the rest of your body suffers.  Spinal subluxations can cause your fingers to tingle, your head to hurt, or your back to seize up.

Diet

If food is the fuel to the body, then for your body to perform like a sports car, you must put the best fuel in the tank. Just because you exercise every day does not excuse poor eating habits.  Eating healthy foods that are not processed ensures that your body can get all of the vital minerals and vitamins needed to function properly.

Attitude

What you think is what you are.  I heard this saying years ago and took it to heart.  Having a positive mindset sets you up for success.  Set a goal for yourself and then visualize yourself achieving that goal.  Surround yourself with positive energy.  I like to practice Feng Shui for a positive household energy, but there are many things you can do to create a positive attitude. Surrounding yourself with friends who are positive is a step in the right direction.

Movement

You cannot simply undo the harm done to your body during the workweek by going to the gym three times a week. Sitting at a desk for eight more hours a day harms the spine and joints.  Moving periodically throughout the day helps.  If on a long road trip, stop every couple of hours to stretch and walk around.  Use the time after you get home from work to move around your home or yard.  Make sure to move every part of your body every day.
