How to Make Your Posture Work for You

By Sandy Schroeder

When we look in the mirror, we stand up straight and smile. But when no one is looking, we may slip into a damaging posture that could cause future backaches.

As schedules and deadlines load up or approach, there is a tendency to worry less about posture and focus more on getting the job done.

Moms face this as they lift toddlers, tote groceries, lug laundry or tackle household cleaning. Dads do the same, as they settle in for long sessions before work screens, or spend time driving or flying,

Somehow, the spine hangs in. But later, painful twinges in the neck or back may refuse to leave. If you suspect that you could pay the price for careless posture, poor lifting, or lengthy sitting, it may be time to rethink everything.

Chiropractic Rethink

The Joint Chiropractic clinic near you can help. When you come in, your chiropractor will explain spinal health. It’s simple. If the spine thrives, you may too.

Using a spinal adjustment to realign the spine, your chiropractor will seek to relieve pain and improve spinal communication. The end result may be far-reaching pain relief in the back, neck, sciatic nerve or other joints. There may also be broader benefits with more energy, sharper mental focus, and better sleep.

Then your chiropractor can give you tips for posture at home and at work. Check your posture in a three-way mirror, or have someone take a picture of you.

If your head juts forward, your stomach sags, and your shoulders slump, you may need to post that picture as a reminder to change

When the spine is aligned, the spine, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles are balanced with body weight evenly distributed. This produces less stress and strain on the body, and cuts the risk for neck, back and shoulder pain. Keep these posture checkpoints in mind.

Posture Checkpoints

Visual Correction – Picture a line running from the top of your head down to the floor, with the ears, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles lining up. Each time you stand or sit, look for that straight line.

Chair Lineup – Sit with your feet flat on the floor, shoulders down, head upright, and chin pulled in.

Position Shoulders – When you sit, keep shoulders down and chin level. Draw your shoulders back and squeeze the blades together.
