5 Simple Ways to Increase Focus and Productivity

By Genevieve Cunningham

Most of us work hard to be productive members of society. We want to be productive at work, at home, and in the general comings and goings of life. Perhaps it’s this desire that makes it incredibly frustrating when we feel our concentration and productivity slip a little bit. To get yours back on track, check out these tips for improving your focus.

Get More Sleep

Sleep deprivation is an excellent way to wreak havoc on your body and mind. Your entire being will feel exhausted, rundown, and slow to concentrate. If you’re having difficulty focusing, just try to get a little more shut-eye on a regular basis. Turn off the electronics and lights, set yourself a bedtime, and watch your concentration improve at home and at work.

Unplug

We’re all connected all of the time. While this has some awesome advantages, it also has some serious drawbacks. Being plugged into technology all of the time keeps your brain in overdrive. It doesn’t have the chance to unwind and relax. In order to refocus, just make some time to completely unplug. No phones, no laptops, no YouTube. While it will feel a bit like an addict breaking an addiction at first, you’ll soon notice some positive benefits to your body, mind, and emotions.

Exercise Regularly

Exercise is good for your body, but it can also enhance the function of your brain. Exercise keeps your mind active, yet relaxed and free of stress. Pick an activity that you enjoy, and participate on a regular basis. You might be surprised at how much better you can focus after hitting the gym just a few times.

Pick Up Yoga, Meditation, or Prayer

It doesn’t matter what you call it. You need some time to stop thinking and just breathe. Whether you feel like practicing yoga, enjoying some meditation, or engaging in personal prayer, it will bring some peace and calm to your mind. And the more calm your mind, the easier it will be to pay attention to the task at hand.

Schedule Some Downtime

In America, we work like crazy. We live to work, identify ourselves based on our jobs, and spend insane hours just trying to get ahead. While being a hard worker is a great quality, it’s crucial that you have some time for rest and relaxation. If you can’t seem to find enough time in the day, literally schedule some downtime. Allowing your mind to relax for a bit will help you regain that focus that has been missing from your life.

We generally pride ourselves on being able to focus and produce, whether that’s at home or at work. But sometimes life really gets in the way. To regain your concentration and be as productive as possible, just use these tips in your everyday life and don’t forget to enjoy yourself along the way.
