Is Keeping Up With Kids Getting You Down?
By Tom Herrin
I love kids, and you probably do, too. They can be fun and energetic. You never know what they will say or ask. They only seem to tire when they are completely exhausted. Following them around and chasing them down can be a different story. If you suddenly find yourself with one or more in your care, you probably discovered that your knees are not what they used to be, and your back is shot. The truth is, you are more likely just not conditioned for this kind of activity, and your back just needs a little attention instead of the neglect you may have shown it. A trip to the chiropractor can have up and going again with a very well functioning back you thought you had lost.
You May Be Your Biggest Enemy
As we get a little older, we tend to change some of our interests. It happens slowly. One minute we are out running around with our young children and the next (or so it seems), we can’t move. We really get sedentary pretty slowly. Planting ourselves like a tree has an immobilizing effect on us. Pretty soon, we stop getting up around the house. You get the picture. Lack of regular movement can stiffen and/or weaken muscles intended to perform work. Our back is no different. The muscles become weaker, allowing the vertebrae to begin to slip or move slightly. When this happens, the nerves that travel through the spine are at risk of damage. Pressure on them can cause severe pain that may have started out as something minor. This is a situation that doesn’t fix itself.
Manipulating the Spine
Your chiropractor can help with misalignment of the spine. It is a real condition that happens frequently due to inactivity or physical stresses. A chiropractic adjustment can help the vertebrae to ease back into place, relieving pressure on the nerves and your pain. Your chiropractor will then most likely suggest some exercises that can improve your mobility and strengthen your muscles. Regular adjustments can help to keep your ability to remain active.
