How to Undue a Slouch to Look and Feel Better

By Sandy Schroeder

Quick! Steal a look at yourself and see what you think. Try to catch yourself bending over your cell phone, working in the kitchen, sitting at your computer, or leaning forward over the steering wheel.

What you see may surprise you. We all like to think that our posture is OK, and most of the time we look alright.

But as we look closer and see heads bent over and necks with slouched shoulders, we may have to reconsider the posture question. In fact, we may decide we want some immediate help to straighten up and look totally better.

In a society where screens dominate our attention, none of this is surprising, but the painful results that often follow can be even more difficult. Over time, all of those posture mistakes can settle into fairly fixed positions that get worse with age. If you have ever noticed a senior who is hunched over you can see where this can lead.

See Your Chiropractor

Seeing your local chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic can be a good way to get a grip on the issue. The Joint’s staff of licensed chiropractors see a full range of teens, adults and seniors on a regular basis. Posture issues related to sore necks, shoulders and backs frequently show up.

When you come in, your chiropractor will ask about your normal routines, how long you have had the pain, and your medical history. This is the time to bring up your questions and issues.

Then your chiropractor will help seek pain relief through the gentle application of a targeted movement to improve motion of the body’s spinal column and extremities, commonly referred to as an adjustment.

You may feel pain relief in your neck, shoulders, back or other joints. At the same time you may feel other unexpected benefits such as more energy, more alertness or improved metabolism. Better sleep, less stress and improved digestion are other benefits that have been noted.

Fine Tuning Posture

As you experience relief, your chiropractor may help you work on your posture, evaluate your workplace, and learn new stretching techniques to resist future slouching.

Finding a chair that provides good lumbar support, positioning your monitor and all other screens at eye level, and adding a regular breaks to your schedule could all be part of the drill.

If this sounds like the support you need, stop by The Joint Chiropractic clinic near you. The Joint makes the whole process amazingly simple. An affordable care program eliminates the need for insurance. Weekend and evening hours are available. No appointments are needed.
