On A Sleep Merry-Go-Round? See Your Chiropractor

By Sandy Schroeder

If you wake up every morning with a stiff neck, and have trouble going to sleep every night, you may be on a sleep “merry-go-round,” looking for a way to get off.

Harvard researchers say sleep issues can interfere with normal muscle relaxation and healing that happens during sleep. They found people with sleep problems were more likely to have chronic musculoskeletal pain after a year, than those who slept well.

If you feel caught in this insidious cycle, where pain interferes with sleep, while sleep issues lead to more pain, see your chiropractor for help.

Find the Answers

Stop by The Joint Chiropractic in your area to talk about the problem and find real answers. The Joint is staffed with licensed chiropractors who deal with neck pain and many other musculoskeletal pain issues on a regular basis.

First, your chiropractor will want to talk about your sleep and pain issues. He or she will also ask about your normal activities and medical history. Your chiropractor believes the health of your spine may have the answers you need.

Using a spinal adjustment to correct dysfunctions may provide far-reaching pain relief, and a range of other benefits, such as more alertness, better sleep and fresh energy.

Experiencing Wellness

Wellness is an individual thing. As you assess the results of chiropractic treatment, you may decide to use weekly 15-minute adjustments to continue to feel better. As your pain eases, and your sleep improves, you may want to take additional steps, such as these from the Harvard medical community, to protect your neck and spine.

  • Sleep on your back or side. Stomach positions impact the spine as the back arches and the neck turns to the side.
  • Try a feather pillow that will automatically fit the shape of your neck.
  • Avoid overstuffed pillows that do not have enough softness, forcing the neck to flex, and leading to morning stiffness.

Finally, make your bedroom your sleep haven. Use low lighting, soft colors, and blackout drapes. Consider parking your electronics outside, and skip alcohol, tobacco or stimulating conversations right before bedtime.

If this sounds like a solution you could use, stop by The Joint Chiropractic clinic near you to learn more. The Joint simplifies everything. An affordable care program eliminates the need for insurance. Weekend and evening hours are available, and walk-in visits are welcome.
