How to Change Fitness Plans to Meet Goals

By Genevieve Cunningham

When you’re ready to get fit, it’s tempting to just Google a workout and jump in head first. While any exercise is generally better than zero exercise, it’s important to remember that not all workouts are created equal. Each exercise routine is designed to meet different goals, and the goals should definitely match the intent of the workout if maximum success is to be reached. But if you’ve already started, what adjustments should be made to ensure that the goals and the fitness plan match? Take a look at these tips for changing the routine to meet personal health goals in no time.

Determine Personal Goals

It's tough to work toward something if the end goal is unclear. Sit down and think about what the end accomplishments should look like with any new fitness plan. Is the goal to lose weight? Gain muscle? Get faster? Improve heart health? Write down a list … a very specific list … of personal goals. Once the general direction has been determined, making an efficient plan of how to get there is much easier.

Focus That Attention

Once you’ve set some specific goals, focus the attention on researching ways to meet them. Use trusty old Google to help come up with a course of action. For example, if the goal is to gain muscle, weights may need more of the focus. If the purpose is to slim down, it may be important to focus the attention on a healthy diet and a balanced exercise routine. Don’t let yourself get distracted by the hottest new fitness trend if it won’t help reach the goals that have been set. Focus on personal goals, the individual journey, and leave the rest behind.

Ask for Help

This is truly one of the best ways to adjust any workout to meet new goals. Ask someone who knows! Check out the local gym to find a fitness professional. Show them the long-term goals, the current routine, and ask for tips to help reach those endgame successes. While we can do quite a bit on our own, it definitely won’t hurt to get a little help from someone in the field. With just a little guidance, moving toward ultimate fitness goals may be more successful and faster than ever.

If physical activity isn't part of your life currently, get up and get moving! It doesn’t matter what is done in the beginning as long as getting up is a part of it. But as you get deeper into working out, use these tips to focus that energy and reach the goals that have been set. With a plan, some patience, and some endurance, you’ll have better health and the body of your dreams before you know it.
