Tennis Is A Sport That All Ages Can Enjoy
By Tom Herrin
In years past, a kid in physical education class played the basics. They all played basketball, kickball, and similar things. Someone must have given that a little more thought because people realized that lifetime sports can be enjoyable and rewarding. It doesn’t matter if you have never played, tennis is a sport that almost anyone can start and gain a feeling of accomplishment. Progress is always a better measure than trophies and medals. Personal progress in something can provide far more satisfaction than recognition, though that has its place.
Low Impact Activities Are Ideal As We Age
A lot of sports require, or encourage, people to go out and work up a pretty good sweat. You may find yourself exerting a lot of effort as well as pounding the hard playing surface. With tennis, you can actually increase your activity at a leisurely pace. You can even practice or warm-up on your own by taking a bag of balls and serving them from one side to the other, then switching to the other side to hit them back. There are tournaments and organized play for all ages, even for people in their 80s and 90s. You can play at whatever level you would like because all you have to do is move at whatever speed feels right. The game also allows you to take your time between serves if you need to.
It Is A Pretty Good Social Activity
Tennis is a game that allows for singles or doubles. That is pretty good because you can play with a family member or friend, but you can also play with a group. Since it is not a contact sport, there is no worry about uncomfortable relationships. You can play gender specific or mixed. Many people play on a weekly, or more frequent, basis with a regular group. There is plenty of opportunity to socialize during, between, and after matches.
It Can Help Prevent Depression
When you do something in which you feel like you are getting exercise, you will always feel better. Once you set goals for yourself and begin to reach them, you will have a sense of achievement. Even if you have to adjust those goals periodically, there is much to be said about reaching a goal you have set. Setting new ones actually becomes a welcome challenge. With tennis, you can even cross age gaps and play with a much older or younger person. It can be a fun relationship. So if you think your age is preventing you from enjoying a lifetime activity, give tennis a try.
