3 Things that Could be Killing Your Back

By Virginia Laird

There are many habits, activities, and daily rituals a chiropractor may advise one to change in order to protect the back. It may be possible to undo some of the damage done prior to educating one's self on how to combat back pain. An important question to ask yourself could be: What can I do to encourage (or maintain) a healthy back? One of the obvious things that can be done is a visit to your chiropractor. These can be therapeutic and relaxing as well as corrective among other benefits. However, there are a few other things to consider when answering this question.

You Don’t Workout

Having strong muscles in the back and core can help the spine maintain function. If you don’t already enjoy a workout, learning to endure one could be in the best interest of your back. There is no need to jump out there and begin lifting heavy weights or begin marathon training. A good routine of stretching, light aerobic exercise and some core strengthening can help protect your spine. Many chiropractors recommend yoga and swimming, among other things, that are low stress yet provide good cardio.

You Sleep on an Old Mattress

How long has it been since you bought a new mattress? Chiropractors will suggest that keeping your mattress up to date plays an important role in spinal health. The general suggestion is to change mattresses every eight years. Whether there is a spring poking through or not, time takes its toll on the structure. Mattresses begin to sag in various places causing strain on the back and could make it difficult to get a restful night of sleep. Many chiropractors recommend mattresses that offer support and are not too soft.

Your TV Time is Too Much

Sitting for hours in front of a TV can wreak havoc on the lower back. Typically when tuning in to your favorite program, the body tends to hunch forward. In this “relaxed” position the spine is put in a bind and a good bit of stress. Any chiropractor will suggest focusing on posture. Having good posture can help your health in several ways. If you have a difficult time keeping your posture on point, it may be worth a trip to your chiropractor. With slight adjustments made to the spine, function can be restored. This can help improve your overall health.
