Habits for a Healthy and Happy Spine
By Sara Butler
Pain is an indication that something isn’t working the way it should. So it stands to reason that if you feel good, then everything is working just right – right? Well, not really. Pain is often the last indication that something is actually awry. But you can greatly reduce your chances of reaching that place if you subscribe to the habits of a healthy and happy spine.
Carry On
If you want your spine to be as healthy as possible, then you have to make sure you’re practicing good posture. This isn’t limited to simply sitting up straight or standing with your head directly over your shoulders. It also means that when you’re moving, you have to think about how you’re doing it. Are you relaxed? Are your arms swinging freely? Are you carrying a bag that distributes weight over your whole body evenly? Even how you sleep at night can make a big difference on the health of your spine, so always pay attention to how your body is positioned – no matter the activity.
Exercise
Regular exercise is one of the cornerstones of a healthy spine. If you want your body to function well and be at its best, then you need to maintain a healthy weight and keep your muscles strong and balanced. Make sure you are always engaging your core muscles and that you’re stretching well in order to help your muscle maintain proper positioning.
Eat Right
A healthy spine needs nutrients to stay that way. While many people think of nutrition as a way to help their clothes fit well, it’s also imperative for the health of the central nervous system. A diet full of fresh fruits, leafy green vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help the body to handle stress better and keep the central nervous system functioning as it should.
Rest Well
You need to get enough sleep at night if you want your central nervous system to function at its best. Your entire body actually needs good quality rest at night to rejuvenate. So, ensure your spine is properly supported as you sleep with a good mattress and strategically placed pillows.
See the Chiropractor
One of the best ways to keep a spine healthy and happy is to see a chiropractor. Regular chiropractic adjustments can help to keep your body working as it should and keep your spine healthy too!
