3 Tips to Help You Catch More Zzzzs

By Virginia Laird

Getting a good night of rest can be challenging. Many reach for sleeping medicine in hopes of getting the help desired.  While it may be a nice thought to have a little pill to work magic, it may not be the best choice. Chiropractors recommend implementing a nightly routine as well as cutting out a few things to help get more sleep naturally.

Avoid Caffeine Later in the Day

Caffeine can stay in the body for up to seven hours, making it important to cut the intake of it later in the day. Research suggests to steer clear of caffeinated beverages altogether, but as a lover of a Sonic Diet Dr. Pepper with vanilla, this poses a problem for me. Instead, I follow the advice given by my chiropractor years ago: I am done with my caffeine before dinner. The change wasn’t easy at first, but has been well worth the struggle.

Establish a Nighttime Routine

A parents we insist on routines for our children, bathing and brushing teeth before bed, reading a story, and putting them to bed at the same time each night -- among the various other guidelines we enforce. Routines are equally important to adults. Although an adult's may not be reading a bedtime story, it can include meditation, stretches, and relaxation techniques. Chiropractors suggest a simple and at least 20-minute routine before bed to help the body relax. Once you add an evening routine, you could be sleeping better in no time.

Eat Light at Night

While some may have grown up believing that a full belly can put you to sleep, the truth is the contrary. Chiropractors suggest removing as many distractions from sleep as one can, which includes eating heavy late at night. Having too much in the stomach before bed can cause heartburn. It can also cause an uncomfortable and unsettled feeling, keeping you up later than you would like. It is best to eat well before bedtime, but if you insist on having something in your belly when you go to bed, keep it light.
