Best Ergonomic Changes for Desks
By Lana Bandoim
When trying to create the ideal work environment, many people focus on finding a comfortable or adjustable chair. However, the desk is also important. Consider making the following ergonomic desk changes that chiropractors love.
Reduce Clutter
Instead of competing with coworkers to see who has the cutest photos or largest stuffed animal collection on their desk, consider reducing clutter. Only keep the essential items on top of the desk and store the rest in drawers or other shelves. This will create more space to work and decrease the need to reach over things to get to essential items. Chiropractors see office workers who suffer from muscle injuries because of overextension.
Move the Computer Monitor Closer
When the computer monitor is too far away, neck craning or leaning forward occurs. To find the best position, extend the arm. The fingers should be able to touch the screen. The monitor should also be at eye level, so you do not have to look down or look up to see the screen.
Consider Modifications
Sometimes it is necessary to modify the current desk if buying a new one is not an option. If the desk height cannot change naturally, consider raising it on blocks. Another way to adjust the height is to put the computer and phone on top of heavy books or high plastic tubs.
Change the Phone
If the phone on your desk does not have a speaker option and cannot work with a headset, it is time to change it. Holding the phone in the hands forces people to look down, slouch the back and hurt the neck. Holding the phone up to the ear causes people to tilt the head toward the shoulder and hurts the arm after a long period of time. Consider switching to the speaker option or headset.
Try a Pull-Out Keyboard Tray
A pull-out keyboard tray is a better option for holding a mouse and keyboard. This type of tray makes it easier to keep the elbows closer to the sides of the body. It also allows the arms to rest at 90-degree angles. A pull-out tray can reduce muscle strain.
