Use These Easy Egg Substitutes

By Lana Bandoim

Whether you have an egg allergy or want to stay on the vegan diet, it is possible to eliminate eggs and replace them with healthy substitutes. Recipes can be adjusted without affecting the taste in a significant way. Consider trying these egg substitutes.

Applesauce

One cup of applesauce can replace three eggs in a recipe. Applesauce is made from pureed apples and may be sweetened or unsweetened. However, it is better to use the unsweetened version because it does not affect the taste of the final product. This egg substitute works well for baking recipes such as cakes or brownies.

Xanthan Gum

Some recipes require eggs because they need a binder. Eggs can also affect the texture. Xanthan gum is an easy substitute for recipes that require a binder and may have texture problems without one. You can find xanthan gum in the baking or spice aisle of most stores. It is sold as a white powder.

Plain Yogurt

Plain yogurt without added flavors or fruit can replace eggs in some recipes. Yogurt works well for muffins and cakes. It may also be a good substitute for some cupcakes. Keep in mind that watery yogurt may affect the batter and make it gooey. You may have to adjust some of the other ingredients or use more flour because of yogurt.

Bananas

Mashed bananas can replace eggs in recipes that are sweet. It may be necessary to decrease some of the extra sugar because bananas have natural sugars. Bananas work well for cakes, muffins, brownies and breads. Although bananas can create moist and dense baked goods, they can also affect the taste, and it is hard to mask the flavor.

Ground Chia Seeds

One tablespoon of ground chia seeds mixed with water can replace one egg. Chia seeds have a nutty flavor, so they may not work as a substitute for all recipes. In addition, they can make the finished product dense and heavy. It is better to use this egg substitute for breads and muffins.

Commercial Egg Replacement Products

Commercial egg replacement products are convenient and easy to use. They tend to be sold as powders. They are usually made from tapioca starch or potato starch. Most of these products can be used as binders, and they should not affect the taste.

It is possible to cook and bake delicious meals without eggs. Try these easy egg substitutes, and your dinner guests may not notice the difference.
