Crunches: 3 Reasons You Should Be Doing Them
By Virginia Laird
Many debate whether crunches work or not. Before turning against them, there are a few things to know about this exercise. The first thing to remember is that the crunch is tried and true, as one of the longest-standing ab exercises available. People have seen results by using the crunch for decades. Another thing to keep in mind is, as with any exercise, results do not happen overnight. It takes time and even a change in lifestyle and diet to see the results that are typically desired. The most important thing is to make certain you are using correct crunch form to protect the back and neck.
- Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and hands behind your head
- Using only your ab muscles, lift your shoulders and upper back off the floor
- Hold for one second
- Return to the starting position
Crunches Are The Best
Though there is a great deal of advice opposed to the crunch, research proves that it is the top exercise for the abs, even above the plank. For years, it has been used as the foundation for toning and sculpting the core. This exercise requires one to constantly check form to ensure it is done correctly there is no added strain on the back or neck.
Crunches Target the Six-Pack
Crunches engage the muscles that are necessary in creating the look of the classic, desired, and difficult to achieve, six-pack. When trying to sculpt the abs it is easy to get discouraged as results are not quickly seen. It is important to remember the results come with a great deal of hard work. Don't give up after a week or even a month of serious crunches. Stay the path and enjoy the results.
Crunches Work the Outer Obliques
One of the more difficult areas to work on the core is the oblique (love handle area) muscles, which the crunch puts to the task. Although they are simple and basic, they can help to reduce the unwanted flab we have all become victim to at one point or another. Patience is the key to perfecting the toned ab.
Exercise is one of the areas in life where less truly is more. Keeping things simple and low stress can help you achieve your goals and stay more focused.
Good luck crunching your way to a six-pack!
