Why Tempeh Needs to Be on Your Menu
By Lana Bandoim
Are you tired of cooking the same steamed vegetables, rice and chicken every night? If the kids are complaining about the lack of variety and secretly feeding the dog their dinner, it is time to try new recipes. Consider making a tempeh dish that is both nutritious and delicious.
What Is Tempeh?
Tempeh is fermented soybeans that form a solid block or long patty. It usually looks white or yellow. After soybeans are soaked, they are cooked and fermented to make tempeh. You can cut the block of tempeh into small pieces or crumble it. Most grocery stores sell tempeh that is precooked or ready to eat, but you can cook it at home to make it softer.
Meat Replacement
Tempeh is a popular meat replacement for vegans and vegetarians. However, you do not have to be a vegan or vegetarian to enjoy it. Tempeh has a chewy texture and nutty taste. Consider replacing the meat in one of your favorite recipes with tempeh. It can hide in many dishes without affecting the flavor in a significant way.
Health Benefits
Tempeh has multiple health benefits. Tempeh is a good source of protein, iron, calcium, niacin, riboflavin, magnesium and other nutrients. It actually has more protein than tofu, so many vegetarians and vegans prefer it.
The fermentation process that creates tempeh also makes it full of healthy probiotics. They can improve digestion and the immune system. Tempeh may even help you lose weight because it makes you feel satisfied after a smaller meal and controls the appetite.
Tempeh Recipe Ideas
Tempeh is versatile and works in many dishes. Tempeh absorbs sauces and marinades. Consider making a tempeh and sweet potato skillet meal that is easy and fast. Other delicious ideas include tempeh tacos, stew, curry and lettuce wraps. Update the classic spaghetti and meatballs by replacing the meat with tempeh. Put a slice of tempeh on a sandwich or roll instead of ham. Make tempeh chili with beans and skip the meat.
One of the easiest ways to prepare tempeh is to bake it. Cut a block of tempeh into small slices and put them in a baking dish. Cover with BBQ sauce or another flavorful sauce. Bake for about 20 minutes. The result is nutritious, delicious and crispy.
Before the kids whine about another dish of chicken or rice, surprise them with tempeh. Experiment with new recipes and make tempeh a fun new addition.
