How to Find the Perfect Gym

By Lana Bandoim

The fliers for the new gym down the street are misleading. It is small, dark and empty. You do not want to go back to the old gym that did not have the right equipment. How do you find the perfect gym without wasting hours driving around the city?

Make a List of Top Requirements

What does the perfect gym have that you cannot get at home? Make a list of the top requirements and start searching for local gyms that fit. After narrowing down what the gym must include, it will be easier to find the perfect one. Consider factors such as convenient location, inexpensive monthly fee, easy renewal process, and specific equipment.

Ask for Help

Reach out to friends and family members for advice and recommendations about the gyms they love. They may even have a discount they can share if you decide to join their gym. Talk to coworkers and neighbors to find out where they work out all the time. Pay attention to both positive and negative reviews so it will be easier to make a choice.

Look Online

Start by looking at the websites for local gyms. Then, search for information on social media and review sites. This will provide a variety of opinions. Consider the reviews and pay attention to the pictures. They can save time by narrowing down the list of choices.

Visit the Gyms

Sometimes the only way to find the perfect gym is to visit multiple locations. Create a plan and map out a way to see several gyms in one trip. Only visit the top choices to save time. Make sure to talk to some of the gym visitors to see how they feel about a specific location.

Check the Contracts

One of the biggest complaints about gyms is their difficult contracts. They are long and filled with hidden fees. It is often hard to cancel a gym contact over the phone or through email. Some locations require that you visit the gym and talk to a manager to end the contract. Also, pay attention to the renewal language in the paperwork. Some gyms automatically renew memberships every month or year and can raise fees during the process. They may automatically charge a credit card or debit card, so billing disputes can be hard.

Stop struggling to find the perfect gym, and use these tips. Working out alone may not be enough, and gyms have extra equipment that is hard to replicate at home.
