Your Grandparents Probably Had Good Coping Skills

By Tom Herrin

It doesn’t take much time to hear talk about global warming.  No matter what people think the cause may be, the fact is it has been a little warmer on average the last few years.  With that said, it has only gained a small bit of temperature in recent years.  The excuse of global warming in respect to dealing with hot weather doesn’t really stand up as a reason for why people can’t work or play outside.  The fact is that people as a whole have gotten soft and stupid.  By stupid, it is meant that they fail to obtain and use good judgment because they live in climate controlled environments.  They are actually as capable as ever to deal with the heat.

Water Is The Number One Factor

There are so many different drinks available today that many people have lost sight of the need for pure water.  Alcohol is terrible in the heat.  Many caffeinated drinks can also add to dehydration.  Sports drinks are well-designed and can be good, but as a supplement only.  People need to consume more water than anything else, and they need to do it on a regular basis.  Waiting until they are really thirsty can lead to a bad outcome.  They should begin drinking water early in the day and continue throughout.

Find Shade

Chances are those grandparents were survivors because they avoided taking unnecessary risks with their health.  Going out in extreme heat and being active is something previous generations knew was serious.  It is essential to participate in some activities early in the morning or, in drier climates, late in the afternoon.  This can help prevent overheating.  Activities that are done outdoors in the middle of the day should be done in some kind of shade.  It should also be in some place with moving air.

The Right Clothes Are Essential

In general, taking off a shirt because it is hot is far from a wise way to protect health.  Lightweight, light colored, and loose fitting clothes are the key to allowing the body to remain as cool as possible.  Airflow is much better.  A hat should be worn with enough of a brim so as to provide some protection from the sun for the face and neck.  Straw hats allow for better circulation of air.  Sunscreen and sunshades are always wise.  If you are planning to be outdoors, simply spend more time in preparation.  It will be well worth it and you will have a much more enjoyable experience.
