How to Increase Energy First Thing in the Morning

By Genevieve Cunningham

We all need one thing in the morning. Energy. Most of us are dragging ourselves out of bed, stumbling through the morning routine, and finally waking up somewhere on our way to work. And while this can certainly feel like the norm, it absolutely doesn’t have to be! If you need a little more energy first thing in the morning to start the day off right, take a look at these easy habits to add to the routine.

Drink a Glass of Water

People who subscribe to this idea swear that a big glass of water first thing in the morning is even more effective than coffee. Why? Water tends to wake up the mind, get metabolism and digestion moving, and hydrate the body. These all work together to provide you with a quick energy boost. It’s actually quite difficult to drink an entire glass of water first thing, so be easy on yourself as you adapt to the habit. As you get used to it, you may find more energy and be able to break your morning caffeine habit all in one step.

Do a Quick and Easy Exercise Routine

Exercise does not make you feel more sleepy in the mornings! Many people believe that exercise in the morning will tire them out for the rest of the day, but that is generally not the way it works. A quick and easy routine (we’re not talking hours of hardcore exercise) can get your blood pumping, wake up the mind and nervous system, and boost your adrenaline … all of which lead to more energy. Find a simple 10 or 15 minute routine, add it to your morning, and you’ll be more energetic as the day goes on.

Don’t Hit the Snooze Button

It’s tempting. That snooze button is so easy, and it’s only five more minutes. What harm can it do? Actually, hitting the snooze button can make you more tired when you finally decide to get up. Your body has already been awakened from deep sleep, so the next few minutes of drifting in and out will only make you feel more sleepy. Instead of hitting the snooze, get up with the very first alarm. This will take some self-discipline and determination, but once you make it a habit, you’ll likely find more energy is a staple of your morning.

Being a bit tired in the morning is normal and OK. But we don’t have to be zombies every morning for the rest of our lives. Instead, we can make some small changes to our routines that can make a big impact on our energy. Use these tips, stick with them, and you may notice a drastic change in your energy levels from here on out.
