Tips for Staying Healthy on Vacation
By Genevieve Cunningham
It’s that time of year. The time of year for vacations! Summer tends to be the time of year when people pack up, travel far away, and leave all their worries behind. But if you’re not careful, you might bring a few worries back with you … such as worries about your health. It’s tough to stay healthy on vacation, but it’s not impossible. Take a look at these tips for maintaining your health while on the go this summer.
Pack Some Food
It’s tempting to eat every meal out on the town, but this is definitely not healthy. Meals at restaurants tend to have more calories and higher fat. If you don’t plan ahead, you’re likely to eat hundreds of more calories per day than what you’re used to. Instead, pack just a little bit of food for your trip. Perhaps breakfast and snacks are a good place to start. Plan for a few meals out (it is vacation, after all!), but plan ahead to keep your calories and waistline under control.
Make Time for Exercise
You don’t have to keep up your exact routine, but it’s important to make some time to move. If you’re at a hotel, take advantage of their exercise room. If you’re not keen on that idea, think about exploring the town on foot instead of by car. There are many ways to add a little movement into the day while on vacation. Just make it a priority and your health will be better off when you get back home.
Drink Water
When most people travel, they tend to reach for sodas and energy drinks. We all want energy and flavor and fun … it’s vacation! But this will leave you drinking massive amounts of needless calories. Instead, stay hydrated and skip the calories by drinking plenty of water. Pack a water bottle and sip all day. This is an easy and cheap way to stay healthy on any vacation.
Staying healthy on vacation might seem like a bit of a challenge, but it can definitely be done. Just use these tips to give you a head start, and you’ll be way ahead of the game. With a little planning and some self-discipline, you can return from vacation with your health intact and still feeling refreshed and better than ever.
