How to Create a Healthy Home
By Sara Butler
You do what you can to make sure your family is healthy, happy, and safe. But a large part of the health and happiness equation is left out for most families – a clean home. It sure would be nice if they’d come out with a self-cleaning home, but that doesn't seem to be on the horizon just yet. When it comes to health and safety, the home should be one of the main focuses to help improve wellness. Here is how you can create a home that supports the health of your family.
Use Natural Cleaners
Harsh chemicals are unnecessary to clean your home most of the time, so make sure you replace whichever cleaners you can with more natural products. Exposure to unnecessary chemicals can interfere with the way your body works. In fact, according to WebMD, exposure to chemicals in the home can have an impact on your brain and central nervous system. It can also increase the risk of asthma, cancer, and other chronic health problems.
When possible, use salt, vinegar, baking soda, and other natural ingredients to make your own home cleaners.
Control the Dust
Most people don’t think about dust as a health hazard but it really is. It aggravates allergies and also contains hazardous chemicals such as fire retardants, lead, and even pesticides.
One of the best ways to control dust is to vacuum frequently. You should also replace any older carpet in the home since it can become a hotbed for dust and everything that’s in it. If possible, get rid of the carpet and replace it with tile, wood, cord, or non-vinyl linoleum. Also dust frequently.
Use Filtered Water
Bottled water probably isn’t your best option – filtered tap water is. According to the Environmental Working Group, bottled water is full of contaminants you definitely don’t want your family drinking. Tap water is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency, so you can easily find out how the tap water in your area measures up. Adding an additional filter to your tap water should take care of any pollutants that may be in it! A pitcher-type filter will do the trick but you can also attach one to your faucet for convenience.
Your home should be a place where your family can rest, relax, and rejuvenate. So make sure you’re taking the right steps to make it a place that is also healthy for your family!
