How to Greenlight One Good Day After Another

By Sandy Schroeder

Think of the most positive person that you know. What makes that person tick, and how do you capture the magic?

I have known some very positive and very negative people over the years. The positive ones always got a call back. The negative ones were usually left waiting.

We all know positive attitudes outrun negatives, but sometimes it’s hard to hang in there when work piles up, accidents happen, and the phone just keeps ringing. For me, my kids, my cat, and freshly brewed coffee are good incentives. Getting outside every day, and helping others, works too.

Take a look at this list from Lifehack and see what might work for you.

You may be happier outside – I worked with a group who had a small garden with benches and a gazebo right outside their office. Whenever I worked with them, I always voted to have lunch outside. We always did our best work out there.  If nature revives you, find ways to build it into your life at home and at work.

Help someone – It doesn’t have to be a big deal. It could be as simple as dropping in on a neighbor who never gets out. Or take your kids to visit a rescue center for birds or marine life, or a shelter for cats or dogs. Donating time, energy, and supplies will work for them and leave you feeling great.

Pause and take note – Look around. Focus on your family, your work, your friends, your pets, your life. That’s built-in positive motivation.

Giggle more - Keep the mood light whenever you can. Laughter releases mental and physical tension, eases pain, and shields us from the dents that stress leaves. Funny movies, shared jokes and amusing friends keep us going.

Take regular breaks – Pushing ahead gets the job done, but exhaustion is seldom worth it. Find ways to take 10 to 15 minute breaks throughout the day to refuel your mind and your body.

Cultivate positive friends – The more upbeat people you know, the better your chances of staying on track, and moving ahead. Cheerfulness and stress are both contagious. Opt for smiles.

Spot the good stuff – Finding the bright spots in everyday situations can make a world of difference. Look for real genius wherever you are. Gradually, you may develop an eye for smart solutions, true wisdom or real creativity that helps make a project.

Whatever works for you to make the day good may spill over onto the next one, too. Once the positives start happening, keep going!
