3 Tips to Selecting the Perfect Backpack

By Virginia Laird

Choosing a backpack can be as difficult as deciding what to wear the first day of school. Although it can seem slightly overrated to the parents, this is a huge statement piece for the students. My daughter, armed with a list of the things she wanted it to include, began shopping for her next backpack the day school ended last spring. After a search I was sure would never end, she finally settled on one just a couple of weeks ago. Although the search was lengthy, I was glad to see her apply a couple of chiropractor recommended tips to help her find the right one. Here are some things to consider when looking for next year's backpack.

Try on the Backpack

Always have your student try on the backpack. This may sound silly, but it is important to know how the backpack will fit. Will it be too long? Will it be too wide? Does the bag have something about it that is uncomfortable for your student? Chiropractors suggest that trying on the backpack can be as important as trying on shoes. They continue to suggest that if it is uncomfortable at the store empty, the discomfort can only be increased when a pile of books is added to the bag.

Choose a Backpack with Wide Straps

When selecting any bag, chiropractors suggest looking for a bag with wider straps. This helps to distribute the weight evenly. Bags with thin straps can offer issues with circulation. If a backpack with wide straps has a waist strap, this is a gold mine of a choice. Waist straps help to keep the load from moving around. It also helps the weight to redistribute so that the back does not carry the bulk of the load.

Find One with Wheels, if Possible

Chiropractors suggest the best choice for a backpack is one with wheels. This can keep the stress and strain from heavy books and school supplies off the student's back altogether. Some schools may not allow this type of backpack. Make certain to check with the school's guidelines before purchasing a backpack. If this type of backpack is not allowed in the school your child attends, it is possible to use this backpack traditionally while at school and wheel it when outside the school day. Anytime the load can be lighter for the student, even if it is from the car or bus to the school, it is a help to your student's back.
