3 Lean Protein Sources That Aren't Chicken
By Genevieve Cunningham
Protein is an important part of every diet. It’s necessary to get plenty of protein in order to feel full and satisfied, build strong muscles, and keep your diet balanced. While it’s relatively easy to get protein -- just look to meats! -- it can be tough to keep your protein options both low calorie and interesting. If you’re sick of the same old proteins in your diet, take a look at these three delicious lean proteins that can keep your diet healthy.
Egg Whites
Eggs are an excellent source of protein, but if you want the super lean option, just skip the fatty yolk and use the whites instead. Egg whites are incredibly low calorie, and they’re so easy to add to your menu. Scramble them up and eat them for breakfast, whip some egg whites into your oatmeal, or thicken up almost any meal by adding some whites. This is one of the easiest ways to get a little protein without packing in the calories.
Salmon
One of the healthiest lean protein options is fish. Whether you’re a seafood eater or not, salmon is a good choice. For those who like fish, salmon hits the spot. For those who aren’t crazy about fish, salmon is one of the least offensive choices. It’s fairly versatile, with numerous recipes to choose from ranging from salads to grilled salmon to salmon patties. Along with protein, eating this fish will also give you healthy doses of omega-3 fatty acids, numerous vitamins, and healthy fats.
Beans
Beans make a good option for vegans, vegetarians, or for any person looking for a non-meat option. Beans are packed full of protein as well as fiber. They can help you feel full, make an excellent side to various meals, and they taste delicious too. Most people like at least one kind of bean -- pinto, black, navy, lima -- making them a good choice for adding to almost any menu.
Getting enough protein is important, and with the right options, it can be delicious too! While regular red meat and chicken are good protein sources, eating lean protein helps to keep your diet more balanced and healthier overall. Just add these choices into your regular menu and enjoy the flavor as well as the boost to your health that may come with it.
