Back-to-School Made Easy with These Tips
By Virginia Laird
If going back-to-school has you or your children getting slightly on edge, take a deep breath and relax. There is no reason to let heading back to the classroom get you down. There are a few things that students can do with the help from their parents to ease the doldrums of going back to school including:
- Demand a bedtime
- Plan for the long weekends ahead
- Know the after school routine
Demand a Bedtime
As a parent, it is important to take control of setting the routine at home, more importantly, the bedtime. No matter the age of the student, a bedtime can be helpful. This encourages students to get the right amount of sleep each night. The National Sleep Foundation has provided framework for the amount of sleep each age group should have. It can be surprising to see the amount of sleep that is recommended for most age-groups.
Plan for the Long Weekend Ahead
There are multiple long weekends ahead, the first being Labor Day. These plans do not have to be anything big and extravagant. A simple day trip can help add excitement and provide something to look forward to. As people plan something small for each long weekend, the school year may seem to pass more quickly.
Know the Afterschool Routine
It is vital to have an afterschool routine. Students can benefit from knowing what to do after school. Afterschool plans can include a snack, homework, and even a light nap or free time. Knowing when to accomplish the homework can ensure that it actually gets done. Putting assignments off until the last minute can be stressful for the entire family. Parents need to keep in mind that some children need more encouragment than others. Try not to get grumpy with a child who may be having a difficult time staying motivated; after all, these same kids have been at a desk for the better part of six hours. Allow for some downtime followed by words of encouragement and homework.
Adding a few of these tips to your family routine may help the back-to-school transition seem more easy and welcomed. May you and your family enjoy heading back to the classroom. Good luck in the adventure that lies ahead and may this year be filled with many good times.
