How to Cut Back on Netflix for Better Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

Netflix. Oh how this generation of people love their Netflix. And honestly, who would blame us? Commercial-free, super affordable, and the whole season in one day. What’s not to love? Unfortunately there’s a possibility that our love and affection for Netflix may be doing a number on our health. Take a look at these ways in which streaming television is harming our health, followed by some tips for breaking the addiction.

The Harm

Netflix isn't harmful if used appropriately, but unfortunately, few of us use it sparingly. Some of the health problems that it may bring to your life include:

  • Excessive sitting - Too much sitting can be horrible for overall health. It can cause problems with excess weight, circulation, and can even lead to long-term complications.

  • Inactivity - Beyond excessive sitting, Netflix and similar programs have helped us all to become incredibly inactive. We watch TV, maybe get up for a bathroom break or a snack, and repeat. Over time, this does a number on our well-being.

  • Screen addiction - Addiction to all things technology is a real thing. And any time that you’re addicted to something, especially when it adds little value to life, it’s considered harmful to health.

The Solutions

There are many solutions to correcting the potential harms that don't include depriving yourself of your favorite shows. A few suggestions might include:

  • Limit time - While this is tough, it allows you to have your cake and eat it too. Instead of completely giving up the streaming TV, just cut back to a set amount of time each day and stick with it.

  • Go cold turkey - If your addiction is severe, you may just want to go cold turkey. Stop paying the bill, and Netflix will cease to exist in your world.

  • Make a compromise - If you can’t stop watching, try doing physical activity during your favorite shows. Get a treadmill, do yoga, or just move about while you’re binge watching the latest TV drama.

There are very few people who don’t use and love the streaming TV services of our time. But there are also very few people who don’t suffer from it as a result. In order to enjoy all that the modern world has to offer, try making some adjustments in your routine. With some small changes, you may be able to save your health and your weekend binge session at the same time.
