Disasters Can Happen In Your Area
By Tom Herrin
When I was younger, it seemed like disasters were something that happened some place far away. In recent years, I have seen that this is not quite the case. While it is not necessary to be paranoid, being prepared for disaster can help provide peace of mind for anyone. There is often a potential disaster waiting that may have a very small trigger. Floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, and wildfires are only a few of the things that happen on a regular basis. Being prepared for circumstances that can result from these or any other potential disasters is really something everyone should strive to improve.
Can You Survive Without Power?
Most people have become pretty dependent on public services. Water, electricity, and communications are something everyone expects to be there. Power outages can occur due to all kinds of situations. When there is suddenly no power, what people have taken for granted becomes huge. Cell phones are of no use if the towers are out or phones cannot be charged. Planning for storing enough water to get through a few days without can provide people with a greater ability to function normally. When the water supply in Beaumont, Texas was lost due to plant failure, it became pretty desperate. Foods that can be eaten without cooking or using extra water can be useful. Having a means of opening a container without power is another essential.
Physical Preparedness Is A Big Part
For those who may think they don’t need to exercise, it would be wise to consider how well they would do in a crisis. Maintaining good health may be founded upon a person’s ability to keep up their strength and avoid illness. Basics such as vaccinations should be well thought out. Tetanus is a common vaccination, but without availability of a booster with certain injuries, it can be life-threatening in a hurry. Being physically able to endure difficulties can mean everything in a real disaster.
Plan As A Family
Having a means of communicating with family members in a disaster is more important than most of us realize. There needs to be a system of accounting. There must also be some kind of basic first aid supplies and the knowledge of how to use them. Having adequate supplies for keeping warm should be considered. A few bottles of sanitizers that do not require water for cleaning help stretch water supplies and make the experience more pleasant. Living a healthy lifestyle should always include planning ahead. The knowledge that disasters can happen anywhere can help drive good planning and provide peace of mind.
