Are You Really Ready If Disaster Strikes?

By Tom Herrin

Most people probably feel that they are prepared for most situations.  When it comes down to it, most are probably unprepared.  They tend to take their current situation for granted.  The  false sense of security provided by public services can be misleading.  Once major communication devices are taken out of service, people often realize their limits.  An example of this is television.  For those on satellite, service is often interrupted during inclement weather, which may be the time it is most needed.

Make Communication A Priority

When a crisis occurs, family members can easily lose contact with each other.  It is essential that there is a plan in place so that everyone knows how to contact each other, as well as other family members and other trusted people.  Phone numbers, email addresses, and other means of communication should be kept by every member of a family or group.  Ways to monitor alerts and information should also be made available to each person.

Basic First Aid Should Be Part Of Any Plan

Injuries are a potential part of any emergency situation.  It is best if each member of a family knows and understands how to administer first aid.  There is never a way to pre-determine who will need it.  Supplies should be in a place that is highly visible and within reach of anyone who can use it.  They should also be contained in something that is portable and easy to carry in case people have to make a quick exit.

Know Trusted Sources Of Information

Everyone needs to know the meaning of the various kinds of alerts.  We have a weather radio, but it is easy to be annoyed by the frequent signals and tests sent out.  We have to remind ourselves of just what is meant by each of them.  Unplugging the device only eliminates any help it can provide.  A couple of years ago, we had a catastrophic flood in our community due to heavy and intense rain.  It was just a storm system, but it sat in on top of us and dumped a record amount of rain in a short period of time.  I had not realized how much so until I tried to cross town to get to where my wife was.  We traveled through nothing but high water.  One person drowned in their car, and a train was derailed as it ran into high water with workers having to be rescued.  Being tuned in to the right information might have prevented these problems.  We all need to assess our plans and make them available to every family member.
