Health and Wellness for the Whole Family

By Brandi Swieter

Many individuals focus on how they can make themselves healthier. They start to eat better meals, work out more often, and drink more water. People can take this a step further by working with their entire family to get them healthy, as well. Doing things together can help keep everyone involved motivated and onto better health and wellness for all.

Making Healthy Meals

Parents shouldn’t eat vegetables and fruits themselves and give their children junk food. Everyone in the household should eat the same things so each person can get healthier. Making healthy meals is as easy as adding choice ingredients to previous concoctions that were loved in the household. Rather than using beef, for example, ground turkey provides a leaner alternative. It is also wise to add veggies to every meal to ensure everyone gets in their daily servings. Cut it up small and kids won’t notice what they’re eating.

Family Exercise

Exercise doesn’t have to mean doing a workout routine at the gym or even in the home. The whole family can get outside for some fun exercise together. Playing a game of basketball, jumping rope, swimming, and even going for a walk on a nature trail are all great ways for everyone in the family to get in some exercise for the day. Try to incorporate these activities into the schedule a few times a week at minimum.

Stop Buying Soda and Juice

Water is the only beverage people need. It quenches thirst, has no calories, and keeps people hydrated and healthy. Stop buying soda and juice that the kids can get into and make sure they’re drinking their water. If they truly don’t like the taste and want some flavor, there are flavor options available in-store that do not add extra sugar or calories. They should still be used sparingly, though, ensuring kids get a taste for natural water at times.

Families should work together on their health and wellness. Rather than having one member working out regularly and avoiding sugary foods, everyone in the household should do it together to help each person meet goals. With a few simple changes to the schedule and meal plan, families can become healthier together.
