Does Your Family Know What To Do In A Disaster?
By Tom Herrin
While there have certainly been more than a few scares recently about disastrous events, people near Atlanta may feel comforted in that they are quite a distance from the ocean. That may make them feel that they are fortunate to be so far from what may seem to be harm’s way. If that were only the case, it would be great. I live more than 200 miles from the coast, but we lost a church building as a result of Hurricane Alicia in the early 1980s when a tornado spun off from the storm system. No one is ever exempt from disasters, so the best thing to do is have a good plan.
Let Everyone Be Involved
When trying to form a successful plan, it is pretty important to include as many people as possible. Children are far more likely to buy in and understand a plan if they have a part in developing it. They may have observations that others overlook. Their simple questions and comments are almost always useful as different perspectives. They are often keenly perceptive. As the family builds a plan, it is important that every member have input, understand it and be able to carry it out.
Be Sure To Include What It Takes To Survive For A Few Days
The most critical part of any supply list is bottled water. When anything disrupts the water supply, it becomes critical in a big hurry. This can lead to panic and poor decision-making. Having food that can be eaten without cooking is another thing that can prolong survival in a pinch. First aid supplies and knowing how to use them is vital. The last thing to have is copies of important documents such as birth certificates and insurance papers. If these things can be kept together in something that can be picked up and carried out on a moment’s notice, there is an increased chance of survival and good decision-making.
FEMA Can Provide Information
The Federal Emergency Management Agency can provide information for those seeking it. There are several other resources that may be tapped as well. If you will utilize these, they can serve as a guide for developing a good plan. Let the entire family be involved in the plan, and everyone will be on the same page and have a working understanding of how to react.
Also important is being in good health to withstand the turmoil your life will be in. Don't take your health for granted, either. It may save your life.
