3 Ways to Improve Your Flexibility

By Genevieve Cunningham

When we’re young, we often take our flexibility for granted. Touch my toes? Easy. Sit cross-legged? No problem. As we get older, this natural flexibility that we all possess begins to fade. Soon, touching our toes is out of the question. In fact, even getting up off of the floor becomes difficult. So how can we regain some of the coveted flexibility and keep it throughout our entire lives? It’s absolutely possible! Take a look at these three ways to improve your flexibility to leave you feeling better than ever.

Join Yoga

Everyone thinks of yoga when they think of flexibility. If you want to stretch deeper and bend more freely, join a local class. There are many options to choose from -- hatha, ashtanga, hot yoga. While you might feel quite stiff and especially silly at first, your body will get to know the moves and the routine. After a few classes, you may notice your flexibility improving just a little; and after many classes, you may be able to touch your toes and stretch in ways you haven’t done in years.

Take Ballet

Ballet is a great way to gain some flexibility. This form of dance requires long, lean muscle use. The teacher will ask you to stretch your legs and arms in a graceful way and point your toes to stretch even further. Many people like this option because it’s fun. The more fun an activity is, the more likely you are to stick with it, and the better results you’ll experience in the long run.

Stretch at Home

While taking different classes is a great way to improve your flexibility, nothing beats what you do on your own. If you want to be more flexible, you have to stretch. Stretch first thing in the morning, while you’re watching TV, or just before bed. The more you stretch, the more flexible you will become. Make this a daily habit, and you’ll be shocked at how quickly your body responds.

If you want to be able to move again, you can make it happen. Use these tips to get you moving in the right direction. With a little hard work, some patience, and plenty of stretching, you may be able to touch your toes, get off of the floor with ease, and feel more limber than you’ve felt in years.
