Handling Stress on Vacation

By Sara Butler

You go on vacation to escape the stresses of everyday life. But you may find that a whole new set of stresses is waiting for you when you’re supposed to be spending your time relaxing. Here are a few tips to help you make your vacations the escape from stress that you really need so you can come back refreshed and rejuvenated – as if you’ve been on vacation!

Why Stress Follows You on Vacation

For some people, stress can actually increase when they’re on vacation. That’s because when everyday worries are stripped away and you’re out of your regular routine, it’s a lot easier for negative thoughts to take up space in your brain. Your thoughts simply become repetitive as you begin to worry about the same thing over and over again. That makes it much more difficult to be in the moment and only adds to the stress you’re already feeling.

Identify Manageable Stress

Letting stress get out of hand can literally kill you. It can increase your blood pressure, cause you to lose sleep, increase your risk of heart disease, and contribute to obesity. So, work to identify the things in your life you can manage to help take away some of the stress.

Once you identify them, then you can start to deal with them – and many solutions can travel with you on vacation. Yoga, journaling, meditation, or simply listening to your favorite song are great ways to knock stress out and move on with your day so you can enjoy it. Try to keep track of the positive things that happen each day on your fabulous getaway. That helps you to focus on the good stuff instead of becoming bogged down in the negative aspects of each day.

Have Confidence in Yourself

Do you know who has the power to keep stress from being in control? You do! Letting stress control you is a choice you make, so make a decision to not let it happen. Wake up feeling good and focusing on the fun and relaxation you will have that day. That will help you to look on the bright side no matter what happens. Remember, when you’re in a bad mood it is much easier for stress to take over and ruin your vacation – don’t let it! You got this!

Enjoy a vacation with less stress!
