Why Indoor Plants Are Great for Your Health

By Genevieve Smith

Always wanted houseplants but afraid they’ll wither? There are flora and fauna out there for every lifestyle, from endearing succulents to durable snake plants. You may have been drawn to the idea of a little greenery, but not realized just how good it is for your health. Multiple studies have reiterated the positive impact of a little greenery on mental processing and physical wellness. As if you needed more motivation, let’s dig deeper into the scientific reasons why to invest in some ornamental plants.

Work harder and happier - Research at the University of Michigan found that plants in a study space can increase memory retention by 20 percent. Further edifying evidence from Texas A&M found that work done surrounded by ornamental plants is of a measurably higher quality and done with a higher accuracy than work lacking in influence of the outdoors. Study after study finds that the presence of plants has a dramatic affect on memory, productivity, and concentration.

Breathe easier - NASA conducted a study finding that plants suck out harmful vapors from enclosed spaces in trace amounts. After the study’s conclusion, they released a public recommendation to place a potted plant every 100 square feet for the cleanest breathing spaces.

Keep sick days down - Greenery increases humidity levels in the air, and the Agriculture University of Norway has connected houseplants with fewer instances of sore throats and colds. An added bonus is that higher humidity is a hostile environment for the survival of the flu virus.

Speed up recovery time - Plants within view leave patients with lower levels of pain, anxiety and fatigue, on top of lower systolic blood pressure, found Kansas State University. Some hospitals have taken note and incorporated organic elements into their design, to promote faster healing. I can’t help but wonder if this may be the root of the long-standing tradition to bring the ill flowers to get better.

If investing in plants has been on your mind, stall no longer. There is every reason to decorate with plants, and with the abundance of durable plants out there, you’re bound to find one that matches your availability and interests. Greenery not only looks nice and takes aesthetics to the next level, it also enhances your performance and health. Happy picking!
