With Summer Over, You Can Get More Active
By Tom Herrin
Just about everyone bogs down some in the summer. After all, it is often excessively hot, and people are just not accustomed to getting out in it. There are so many air conditioned workplaces that most people might be risking their health and safety if they were out in the heat for an extended period of time. With that said, one of the best times of year to be active has arrived. Fall brings cooler temperatures and more pleasant days. It becomes a great time of the year to get out and do almost anything without the dangers that are present in the summer months.
Mount Up
If people are up for a change, they can find a nearby stable and try a horseback ride. It may seem a little far fetched, but there are a lot of good things to gain. They will definitely be outdoors enjoying the cooler air. Whether or not it seems so, people will actually burn several hundred calories doing this. The legs must do quite a bit of work in balancing and holding a person in place. The upper body has to work to stay upright as the horse moves. At one time, we did quite a bit of riding, and it was a pretty good workout. One word of caution: Take extra padding to go on the saddle and start with a short period of time and work up. Being saddle sore can be pretty uncomfortable if too much is done at one time.
Find A Corn Maze
These are gaining in popularity. They can be a fun experience while providing a challenge. It requires using the mind to think and doing a lot of walking or running to find the way out. The accelerated pace can increase the heart rate, burning calories. Many people get hooked on these and try to find new ones frequently. It can be a great group activity.
Move Indoor Activities Outdoors
In some cases, you can find relaxation and pleasure by taking whatever you do outside. Whether it is reading, knitting, painting, or something else, having the experience in the fresh air can be refreshing. It may be enlightening as well because it can mean a new perspective. When you feel the fresh fall air, it is often inspiring. At this time, a seemingly sedentary activity can become more physically involving. Anytime this happens, you know you have hit paydirt.
