Do Fall Allergies Have You Falling Apart?
By Virginia Laird
The fresh crisp air of fall may be a welcome change to the heat of summer; however, the allergies that can accompany the cool breeze and falling leaves can put a damper on many aspects of life. A stuffy nose, itchy and watery eyes, headaches, and even a cough can interrupt your ability to get a good night of sleep, a workout, and even impede your focus while at work. Suffering from allergies can even prevent you from enjoying the many fall festivities with your family. Rather than hiding behind the walls of your house while trying to avoid the attack of such dreadful allergies, there are a few things you can do to help prevent it, including:
- Wear clothing to help protect from an attack
- Wash often
- Invest in a dehumidifier
- Don’t hesitate to see the doctor
Wear Clothing to Help Protect From an Attack
Believe it or not, what you choose to wear can help prevent an attack of the allergies. Trying to keep the pollen off your skin is the very best defense method. Some of the clothing that can help include:
- Wearing long pants and long sleeves - This can prevent pollen from getting on the skin
- Sunglasses - Prevents pollen from being blown into your eyes by the wind
- Wearing a hat - Can also help prevent pollen from getting in the hair
- Wearing a mask - During extreme wind to prevent pollens from getting into your body
Wash Often
Although it is not recommended to take a ton of showers each day, it is vital to wash after being outside. This is especially true if you are someone who suffers from severe allergies. After being outside, it is important to rinse the pollen off the body and out of your hair. This can help keep allergies to a minimum.
Invest in a Dehumidifier
When damp air fills your home, it allows mold and other allergens to grow. Dehumidifiers work to take the moisture from the air, removing the opportunity for allergen growth. When allergies have already taken their toll on the body, using a dehumidifier can help bring the symptoms to a stop faster than without one.
Don’t Hesitate to See the Doctor
If your allergies stick around for more than a week, it might be a good idea to see your primary care physician. Many benefit from prescription allergy medicine to help combat problematic allergies. Keep in mind, if the symptoms last too long, sinus infections can set in, causing more discomfort.
Prevention is key to most health issues, the same is true for allergies. Stop living with allergies that put your life on hold and start living allergy-free.
