Healthy Foods That Transition Well Into Fall

By Genevieve Cunningham

When fall finally rolls around, it can be hard to keep healthy eating habits on track. Why? Because fall means comfort food! The cold winds, crispy nights, and big sweaters; comfort food fits perfectly into the mix. Soups, stews, warm drinks, desserts … so much goodness and so many calories! But if you’re trying to watch your weight, there might be a little hope available. For a healthy menu all year long, take a look at these foods that transition perfectly into fall.

Avocado

Many imagine a slice of avocado (or the whole thing!) as part of a nice summer breakfast. But this delicious green food transitions well into the fall months. How? Cut it in half, sprinkle with diced up tomatoes and pop it on the grill. This softens the avocado and gives it a warm, mouthwatering flavor and texture. And for an added bonus, you’ll still get the healthy benefits -- good fats, vitamins -- that come along with its consumption.

Apples

Apples are great in the spring and summer, but they can make a delicious treat in the fall as well. To transition apples into fall, make them into some delicious treats. Slice them up and make them into a pie (healthy recipes can be found online). Cover them in caramel and bake them into caramel apples. Cut them in half, cover with caramel or honey and grill them. There are so many ways (both healthy and not!) to take apples into fall for a healthy snack or special treat.

Peaches

Peaches are another fruit that seem to be synonymous with summer. But peaches can be especially delicious in the fall. Besides making them into a cobbler, you can also cut them in half, sprinkle with honey and almond slivers, and then bake in the oven. They come out soft, sweet, and warm … perfect for fall!

Luckily you don’t have to give up on all of your favorite foods just because of the time of year. While a few foods will need to be left behind, a few can go with you. With some creativity and a few experiments in the kitchen, you may be able to take your favorites into the next season. Use these tips to get moving in the right direction, and enjoy your menu all year long.
