3 Reasons Why You Can Skip Running
By Genevieve Cunningham
Running is quite the complicated exercise. It’s not that it’s hard to do or tough to figure out. We all learn how to run as kids, and we never forget. So how is it complicated? It’s an exercise that we all love to hate. We know it’s good for us. We know it will tone the muscles. We know it will get us in shape. But we still despise it so much. Luckily, it might be possible to skip the running and still get in phenomenal shape. Take a look at these reasons why it might be OK to skip the run without risking your health.
Walking Works, Too
The harsh truth is that, while running is definitely a little harder and burns a few more calories, you can likely get many of the same results by walking. The key? Walk fast. Since most people only jog at a moderate pace at best, walking often brings about improved cardio, stronger muscles, and overall better health -- the same as running. Unless you just really want to run, you can probably walk at a brisk pace and skip the trouble.
Your Joints Don’t Need the Pain
Running is a great exercise, it’s true, but it’s also incredibly hard on the joints. When people run, they really pound the pavement with their feet. This jars the knees and hips, often resulting in pain. As you age, this is definitely a problem that you don’t want to deal with. Choose an aerobic exercise that is easier on the joints -- elliptical machine, walking, swimming -- and don’t worry with the next race.
You Have Other Calorie Blasting Options
Most people who force themselves to run (and not those who do it for fun) do so because they think they have to. They think it’s the only way to burn enough calories. They think it’s the only way to sculpt the muscles. Fortunately, this just isn’t true. There are many exercises that can bring about the same benefits. Walking, aerobics, kickboxing, martial arts … find any sort of cardio that suits your personality, and you can enjoy your workout instead of facing it with dread.
Running is a great way to get in shape, but it’s not the only way. If running isn’t your cup of tea, you can choose something else. Just get moving and stay active to help build strong muscles and sculpt fat for the body of your dreams.
