Why a Good Stretch in the Morning is Important
By Genevieve Cunningham
Most people do it naturally: the wake-up stretch. As soon as our eyes open, we yawn big, stretch wide, and open up our bodies. It alleviates aches and pains and just seems to be the perfect way to get moving in the morning. But as it turns out, stretching at this time of the day may actually be good for your overall health. Take a look at these reasons to purposefully stretch every morning to get the day and your health started off on the right foot.
It Can Wake Up Digestion and Metabolism
Stretching first thing in the morning may help get your digestion and metabolism kicking. The stretch signals to the rest of the body that it is time to get up! You may notice that a deep stretch makes you feel hungrier faster or that it may have you hitting the restroom as soon as you get to work. Though annoying the first few times it happens, these are actually good things! A faster metabolism and more efficient digestion can lead to weight loss and overall better health.
It Can Get Your Blood Pumping
When you stretch, your muscles wake up and demand more blood. They need oxygen to work without cramping, and the heart responds by pumping more blood to the extremities. After a good stretch in the morning, the circulatory system kicks into high gear. This makes your whole body feel more awake, more lively, and healthier throughout the day.
It Can Help You Think
A stretch is good for the mind. Because it demands that your blood gets moving, stretching can make you feel more clear of mind. You may notice that your focus is enhanced and you can concentrate earlier in the day and for longer. Considering most people wake up, get dressed, and head to work, stretching may enhance mental function for better productivity by the time you hit the office doors.
Why not take something that we already do naturally, and then make it even better? Instead of stopping at the basic stretch out of bed, get up and go a little deeper. Stretch every muscle. Relax into each movement. You may find that a stretch in the morning makes you feel better and improves your health in big ways all at the same time.
