The Holiday Candy Trap: What to Eat Instead
By Genevieve Cunningham
The holidays are loaded with tons of fun. Family time, time off of work and school, sleeping in, and presents. It’s great! But along with the fun, the holidays are also loaded with calories. Between sweets, turkey, and all of the trimmings, the calories add up quickly. But nothing compares to the ultimate trap of the holidays … candy. From October (Halloween!) all the way through New Year’s Day, candy is so tempting. And while it’s OK to indulge a little, overindulgence may lead to extra weight and health problems. Instead of allowing the candy trap to get you and your health this holiday, take a look at these great alternatives to take its place.
Fruit
Whether fresh or dried, fruit is a great option to eat in lieu of candy. It satisfies the sweet tooth, provides that candy-like sensation to the brain, but for half the calories and far fewer health problems. Pick up some of your favorite fruit at the grocery store and have it available at home. Any time that a candy craving strikes, just grab a piece of fruit instead.
Nuts
OK … so these aren’t sweet, and they definitely don’t give that candy vibe. But you know what vibe they do have? The holiday vibe, and sometimes that works just as well. Nuts are high in protein, good fats, and can be a great snack if eaten in moderation. If you want candy because of the holiday sensation, a handful of nuts might do the trick. Just stick to the proper servings, and this might serve you well until the candy season passes.
Peppermints
It’s technically a candy, but you won’t want to eat a thousand and they have very few calories. Keep a few peppermints around the house and pop one in your mouth after every meal. It will help give you the candy and holiday vibe all in one, but without as many harmful side effects. It’s a great solution to making it through the candy trap of the holidays without depriving yourself too much.
The holidays are so fun, and part of that is because we get to splurge on food! But if you want to keep your health intact, you’ll want to go easy on the candy. Use these foods to replace the candy urge, and you’ll be far better off when the holidays are over. You’ll satisfy the taste buds, keep your health in check, but still have fun through the comfort food season.
