Sleep Mistakes You Should Avoid
By Sara Butler
Sleeping is important to your overall health and wellness in many ways. One of the ways it supports good health is by helping you to maintain a healthy weight. If you don’t get enough sleep, then it can cause difficulty with concentration while also contributing to an increase in stress, inflammation, immunity, and your chance of developing heart disease. You may be sabotaging your sleep in ways you don’t even realize. Here are some sleep mistakes to make sure you’re not making.
Staying Up Too Late
The hours of sleep you miss out on due to late night work projects (or other diversions) are really terrible for you. The less sleep you get, the more you will crave high-carbohydrate, high-calorie foods. The hormone that causes your body to store fat, cortisol, is also higher when you don’t get enough sleep.
You Use an Electronic Device in Bed
You may want to switch back to paper books if you like to read before bed. Research has shown that the more electronics you bring into your bedroom, the less quality sleep you get. This is reflected in poor lifestyle habits that can increase your risk of diseases such as obesity and high blood pressure. The blue light these devices emit messes with your ability to get some sleep. Shut them off at least an hour before bed in order to get some good quality sleep at night.
You Drink Too Much Water at Bedtime
Drinking water isn’t bad for you, but drinking a lot of water at bedtime is bad due to the simple fact that you must wake up a lot to use the bathroom in the night. Anything that disrupts your sleep at night is not healthy and you should take measures to stop it from interrupting quality sleep.
You Like a Hot Bedroom
Many studies have shown that a cool room below 72 degrees Fahrenheit is what you need to sleep well at night. Cold temperatures at night help your body to cool down faster, meaning you can fall asleep easier and quicker. If you keep your room hot, then it may make it more difficult for you to fall asleep and stay that way.
Sleep is such an important part of your health and wellness, so make sure you're doing all you can to get a proper night's rest or you will notice a decline in your quality of life!
