Maintaining Health Through the Cold Season

By Brandi Swieter

Each year when the cold season rolls around, many more people than usual start getting sick. It can be difficult to maintain one’s health during these months when so many others are catching colds and spreading germs. It is possible, however, to maintain health through the cold season, as long as the right precautionary measures are taken.

Continue Healthy Eating and Exercise

Many people get sick over the holiday season because they skip out on their routine. Rather than sticking with their healthy diet and exercising as usual, some start slacking in these areas to spend their time enjoying holiday treats, shopping sales, and getting everything decorated for when guests arrive. Although it’s easy to succumb to desire and let goals fall to the wayside, it is important to try to keep some semblance of a schedule for those who want to stay healthy. Falling, of course, can let sickness in far easier than if people continued their healthy habits.

Incorporate Omega-3 Fatty Acids into the Diet

Omega-3 fatty acids reduce symptoms of depression. Many people become depressed during the winter months when the days are shorter, thus leading to unhealthy habits that can let sickness in. Incorporating these acids into the daily diet, whether through food or supplements, is one way to help combat the problem. They also aid joint pain and stiffness, which is an added bonus.

Eat Fiber-Rich Foods

Foods rich in fiber help to boost the immune system, making it easier to fight off illness. They also reduce inflammation in the body. Nuts, oats, and apples are three popular sources of fiber. Add these to as many meals as possible to keep the body healthy throughout the cold season.

Go to a Steam Room

A steam room offers a great way to detoxify the body and eliminate harmful toxins built up from illness. Sitting in the steam and getting a break from the business of life can also work to relieve tension and sore muscles, making a person feel more relaxed and better able to get back to their routine of healthy eating and exercising.

Maintaining one’s health through the cold season isn’t always as easy as one would think. With others sick and spreading germs and people often off their health path, illness sets in far too easily. By sticking to a healthy diet, getting exercise, and perhaps even visiting The Joint Chiropractic for regular adjustments, people are better apt to maintain their health and keep their bodies strong for the season.
