3 Signs You're Completely Overworked
By Genevieve Cunningham
Work is an important part of life. Not only does work give us the means to live, but it also brings self fulfillment and personal satisfaction. But even though work is important, there is a point when enough is enough. In America, we’re more overworked than ever. We spend hours and hours on the clock, and this passion for work is causing quite the conundrum when it comes to health. While work can be satisfying, too much can damage both mental and physical well-being. If you’ve been working more than ever, take a look at these signs that you’re a little overworked, followed by some tips to keep it under control.
You Can’t Sleep or Are Constantly Tired
Different people respond to excessive workloads in different ways. But most people experience one of these or the other: insomnia or fatigue. Or sometimes both. When you’re overworked, sleeping patterns are often disrupted. You may feel so exhausted that you can feel it in your bones, and yet, you may not be able to fall asleep at night. It’s a vicious cycle. To alleviate this symptom, leave work as soon as possible for a while, and stick to a wind down routine at night to help you finally get some shut-eye.
Your Anxiety is Higher Than Ever
We’re an anxious people. As a society, we’re suffering from more anxiety than ever before. Could it be because we work ourselves into the ground? If you’re feeling anxious, it might be a good idea to pay attention to your work habits. Are you taking work home? Are you working late hours? Are you running on fumes during the day? If this is you, take a day off and regroup. Leave work at work, finish the day on time, and say no to any extra projects until you can get your anxiety under control.
You Feel Aches and Pains Constantly
Suffering from a few aches and pains as you get older is perfectly normal. But if those aches and pains are becoming a constant, it might be a clue that you need a break. If you’re working so much that it’s literally hurting your body, it’s definitely time to take some time off. It can also be a good idea to make sure your clothing and shoes are supportive, your workstation is as ergonomic as possible, and that you’re getting both enough rest and movement throughout the day. These steps, along with a quick step back from excessive work, may help eliminate the pain for good.
Work is a good thing, but being overworked is not. Pay attention and take care of your body and mind. If you’re working too much, take a break and breathe. Balance your work and life, and your health, fitness, and personal time will all be happier and more productive when it’s all said and done.
