4 Tips for Staying Fit During the Holiday Season

By Brandi Swieter

The holidays often mean spending time with family and gathering around the table for a delicious feast and sweet treats. This can quickly lead to weight gain if people are spending their entire holiday season overeating and hanging around the house rather than staying healthy and active. With a few tips for staying fit during the holiday season, more people can keep up with their health and maintain their weight even while enjoying some of the traditional Christmas foods.

Switch Up the Routine

Some people have a specific fitness routine they follow during the summer months. While it may work well for that season, it probably doesn’t work as great during the holidays. Switch up the routine to find a better holiday plan that will still incorporate fitness. It may mean going to the gym instead of jogging outdoors, or going early in the morning instead of after work.

Wear Layers

If running or jogging outdoors is still the plan for staying fit, then runners need to at least be sure to wear layers. Mornings in particular can get pretty cold, and the cold air can exacerbate certain symptoms, including chest pain. Wear layers and stay as warm as possible while doing outdoor activities to make the most of the session without having to stop due to being cold.

Use Fitness DVDs at Home

Not everyone has time to make it to the gym or outside for a run. The holidays are often filled with far too many tasks, such as shopping for the perfect gifts, attending a holiday party at work, going to family gatherings, cooking and baking, and hanging holiday decorations. Many people may feel like they have no time for fitness during the season at all. By using fitness DVDs at home, more people can get in the workout they need. Even just 10 minutes a day with a short DVD will be enough to get the heart racing and blood flowing.

Make it a Family Thing

The holidays are all about family, so one of the best ways to incorporate fitness into the routine is to incorporate the family as well. All members of the household can get outside for some fitness fun together. Ice skating at the rink, playing an indoor sport, or even going for a hike can all be done together.

Fitness is important to maintain, no matter the season. During the holidays especially, people are often overeating and spending far too much time ignoring their health. The best solution is to utilize these tips and make the most of the time you have for a little fitness.
