Creating a Healthy Home

By Sara Butler

When it comes to your family you want the absolute best for them. That means you want them to be happy and healthy. One of the most important things you can do for your child is to help them develop healthy habits to last a lifetime. Here are some of the best ways you can help your child develop a healthy lifestyle.

Make Fast Food Friendly

It’s not realistic to think that you’ll never be in a rush and stop by a drive-thru in order to feed your family. Life is busy and sometimes you have to eat when you’re on the go. But there are things you can do to try to make this experience a bit healthier. You can:

  • Say no to sides – Have your child eat a sandwich or chicken nuggets alone, they don’t need the French fries or the sugary drink to go along with it.
  • Choose vegetables or fruits – Many restaurants provide fruit, yogurt, or vegetable options for sides. Make sure to order those if you do go with a side instead of anything deep fried.
  • Go for grilled – There are many entrees that star grilled meats instead of deep fried one. Choose the grilled option.
  • Drink water – Skip the soda and go with water or milk.

Be a Role Model

Your children learns a lot just by watching you, so make sure you provide a good model for them. That doesn’t mean you have to strive for perfection in everything you do, but it does mean that you should teach your child the importance of being active and eating right.

Stay Positive

You don’t want to raise a negative Nellie, so don’t tell your kid what they can’t do. Instead, lift them up and focus on their strengths, keeping it fun and positive. Celebrate your child’s successes and help them to develop good self-esteem and a good self-image.

Exercise Together

A family that moves together gets healthy together! Plan times for everyone to get out and get active. Ride bikes, take a walk or go swimming. You can keep it simple by playing tag outside or hide-and-seek. Just get everyone up and moving. It’ll bring you closer and help you all to be healthier.

Being healthy is a family affair, so do it together in order to be successful and happy!
