The Signs of Neck Pain
Often, neck pain is experienced as pain that:
- Feels like tight muscles
- Gets worse when holding your head in one position for too long
- Causes sharp spasms when you try to move your neck
- Radiates to your shoulders or head
- Causes restriction of movement
If any (or all!) of these sound familiar, then you should get evaluated by a chiropractor at The Joint as soon as you can!
The Causes of Neck Pain
You may be wondering at this point how the heck you ended up with neck pain in the first place. The sneaky thing about neck pain is that it can strike suddenly, leaving you wondering what happened. The most common causes of neck pain include:
- Muscle sprain or strain – Poor posture or overuse from repetitive activities such as working at a computer all day can cause sprain or strains in the muscles of the neck. It can also be caused by sleeping in a way that doesn’t properly support the neck and spine.
- Injuries – Whiplash is the most common neck injury, caused by a sudden deceleration during impact in an accident such as a fall, contact sports, or motor vehicle accidents.
- Worn joints – As you age, the joints in your neck can wear down, causing the cartilage that helps to absorb shock between your vertebrae to deteriorate.
- Compressed nerves – Herniated discs in the spine can press on nerves, causing pain.
