Do You Smile as Often as You Should?
By Tom Herrin
First impressions have always been a big deal. The saying goes that you only have one chance to make one. The first time people meet someone, nonverbal communication is huge. Most tend to read body language and expressions. Meeting someone with a scowl on their face sends a message that the person is either unhappy or displeased with that particular meeting. Meeting someone with a smile can brighten the room and create an inviting relationship. There is something about this kind of communication that makes life seem brighter. Smiles may be worth far more than can be measured in terms of overall health.
It Can Improve Physical Health
Smiling is such a natural action that many people never realize that it can actually have physical effects on the body. It can lower blood pressure, at least temporarily. It can slow the heart rate and help the body to relax. It also releases endorphins that help the body to suppress stress hormones. Think about that for a moment. This can play a big role in helping the body to perform at its highest level. This also allows the body to have a stronger immune system.
Relationships Can Be Better
One of the most critical components of any relationship is trust. Studies have shown that people have a greater degree of trust for those who smile. Studies also reveal that at least 50 percent of people smile back when someone smiles at them. Another result of a smile is greater empathy. When people feel empathy for others, they may develop a closer relationship. Often people smile as a way to cover embarrassment or failure. Others tend to smile back in return of the communication. There seems to be a natural acceptance of those who smile.
It Can Enhance Our Natural Beauty
There is no doubt about it, people who smile are more attractive to others. Smiling can also make you appear younger. Studies indicate smiling can make you look as much as three years younger. Smiling can help people to have less pain. One study indicated that smiling can lengthen life. This may be due to the reduction of blood pressure and stress. If you would like to make some easy modifications that can improve your overall health, smile a little more. It doesn't cost a dime.
