Can You Actually Force Yourself to Be Happy?

By Tom Herrin

People really have the ability to control a lot of things that affect their health and well-being.  The problem is that they don’t often realize it.  Feeling that they have the power to manage their own health can be a game changer.  Most people would like to try but simply feel as if the ways that are inexpensive, or too easy, are also too good to be true.  Everyone knows there is a price to be paid in order for something to really be good or effective.  Smiling is a natural act that can actually yield big results if people will choose to do it.

It Can Increase Productivity

Many times, work feels a bit too mundane for people to get excited.  As a result, a lot of people are less productive than they should be.  Smiling while working can help to improve creativity.  This is critical in the success of problem solving.  When people seem happier, they may be able to approach problems with a new enthusiasm.  It also can make the work itself feel less like a chore and more like an enjoyable activity.  It can even increase the likelihood of getting advances in a job due to the reaction of those they come in contact with.

It Can Improve Physical Condition

Smiling has the ability to lower the heart rate as it relaxes the body.  It can also reduce stress.  This can translate into an improved immune system as it allows the body to react more positively to outside factors.  It can also release endorphins that can help to lessen the feeling of pain.  Some studies have indicated that those who smile may expect to live as much as seven years longer than if they don’t.  Those are pretty big results for a facial expression.

Fake It ‘Til You Make It

It has been said that even if you have to make yourself smile, you can still have a great outcome.  Apparently the actions required to make yourself do so can still cause your face and body to relax.  It seems to be the start of a chain reaction.  A smile seems to be more inviting to others.  Trust is increased.  Men appear to be more likely to approach a woman who smiles than one who makes eye contact.  One study showed that those who smile may appear as much as three years younger.
